Make Up Confessions

I don't wear a lot of makeup, or what I consider a lot. Sometimes I leave my house buck ass face naked, mucky hair and all, and other times you can see me looking like I have been studying too much Egyptology. Most of the time it is somewhere in the middle. As a public person, I have to put my best face forward!

Funny how as a young person, I wore more makeup than I do now, and probably needed it much less. Why is it that young people feel they have to wear tons of makeup, when they have porcelain young glowing skin, lush lashes, plump red lips....what I would GIVE to have the skin of my youth back! Now, when I could use a glow, or a bit of blush, I say BAH, too much work, I look too fake, so I am happy just the way I am, even if blotchy, dry, patchy or the color of sour milk - the latter a phrase my AP English teacher used for me.

If I had to choose use only ONE type of makeup, lipstick would be it. I love to draw on my lips, applying the color of my mood. Red, brown, a goth dark plum, or sweet sixteen pink.

When I go to work, or am going out, I wear mascara, sometimes a bit of shadow and/or eyeliner. Eyeliner is like an exclamation point at the end of a sentence on one's eyes. I never wore eyeliner until I was in a pin up girl shoot at Isis's house last year. She also had us paint our fingernails red (yikes-that was the beginning of a new relationship with my nails, I had to grow some!) and we wore false eye lashes for the shoot. Now THAT was a transformation for this 20's flapper model.

Admittedly as an artist I like to use line whether on my lips or eyes, to adorn my face, and would like to do it more, but I think people would think me a freak if I started getting too decorative.

And another confession, I have two pairs of eyelashes that I bought in the Halloween Costume section of Walgreens---a rhinestone adorned set, and one that is made of different kinds of feathers. You never know when someday I will have the occasion to wear them - a shoot, a party, a dare.

But the entire intent of this blog is to say that for the first time in my life I am in love with a mascara that Karen bought me for my birthday from theBody SHop It has a beautiful brush, great coverage and no clumps. It may be 18.00, but my 10.00 tube just doesn't cut it after using this! L'Oreal, we're finished, you've been replaced!

i could live with mascara and lipstick or lipgloss forever... i dont really feel the need to wear much more than that... ever... which is probably one more really good reason they don't let me out much! :)

Tonight my house had the aroma of olive oil, garlic, tomatoes and candles. Keith Jarret was playing in the background, and I had just opened a nice bottle of reasonable red wine. (Osborne Solaz, 2004 Temranillo/Cab- 7.00) I needed it for the sauce, so why not have some while cooking! I took good care of myself all weekend, and felt like cooking for the first time in what seems forever. I am an excellent cook. A collage cook one might say, or better yet, a bricollage cook. I take what is in the house and make a dinner out of it. I think about flavor, texture, color and variety. Most of the time I would rather put this creative energy into visual arts, but on occasion I will push my fine art aside, and the art of the evening is cooking. Candles, music, wine, and a lovely table. I must think more like Monet, and not only make the meal art, but somehow make it my visual art too. Cape Painting

My framing blogs will continue when I’m back in the studio next week. In the mean time, I am enjoying adventures on the Cape. Again I opted to not bring oils as the place I am staying is not conducive to oil painting, so I bought watercolors and my acrylics, although I have not used the acrylics yet. I have a small messenger type bag, that I can put in a few palettes of my Kramer watercolors, several water brushes, a few paper towels, a 6x6 watercolor pad, and a watercolor postcards. This time I bought watercolor greeting cards to paint on too. I can wear this light bag across my body, and hike for miles, plopping myself down on a bench, rock, or table, and paint the scene at hand in an instant. I got to experience the tail end of hurricane Dorian too, the roiling ocean and wind captured on camera and paper, etched in my dna now. I will be bringing home new ideas, new small pieces, hundreds of photographs, ready to settle in for a fall of painting and design work for m

Framing: Sources for Frames

When I was primarily showing fine art collages, and framing antique prints, I collected a wide variety of frames for my work- rarely were two frames were ever the same. But over the years, I have whittled down that collection, as I find myself  using either white (for abstract work) or black floater frames for my paintings. It is more professional to have a "even" look in framing one's work, especially if you are showing several works, or having a solo show. On occasion you can find frames in places like Ikea, or the Christmas Tree Shop, or other such venues. If I find good ones, I will buy them up and keep them for future work. But most of the times I either buy them at Michael's , or American Frame .  On occasion if I am flush, or need a specialty frame, or it needs special care, I will gladly go to the local art supply or framing store. But I usually don't have the money to do that...so I order and frame myself. Michael's has their sales and 40%
